Ahn Taekwondo Columbus
Our Instructors
Ahn Taekwondo Columbus (ATC) was officially founded
in 2003, by Deanna and Robert Jones, who collectively
bring over 30 years of experience in martial
arts to the school. As a former instructor of a sport
club at The Ohio State University and former
instructors of other Taekwondo schools in Columbus,
Deanna and Robert Jones established ATC with the
purpose of bringing Taekwondo training to the students
in central Ohio who were seeking instruction in a more
traditional martial art.
Since the beginning of ATC in 2003, the instructors
have worked hard to distinguish the school in central
Ohio. To date, the following achievements have
been made:
-
2003 Black
Belt of the Year
-
2004
Grandmaster's Award
-
2004 Senior
Competitor of the Year
-
2005 Black
Belt of the Year
-
2005 Branch
(School) of the Year
-
President of
Ahn Black Belt Society
-
Secretary of
Ohio Taekwondo Won
As a certified
Kukkiwon 4th Dan, Robert Jones has been a
student of several martial arts since 1986, but
his primary art is Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo. He
has been instructing Taekwondo since 1989, when
he earned his black belt from
Grand Master
Y.C. Kim. Robert
is an Instructor in the United Taekwondo
Association under Grand Master Kyongwon Ahn with
whom he tested for his 4th
degree black belt.
He is certified by the
United Taekwondo Association, nationally
by the
United States Taekwondo Won,
and Internationally by the
World Taekwondo Federation.
Additionally,
Robert is a certified Instructor with the
United States Taekwondo Won.
Robert
also holds a
black belt in Hapkido and rank in Judo. His
diverse martial art studies also include several
years of studying
ASU Aikido under the direction of
Sensei Larry E.
Bieri.
In 1992, Robert established the Taekwondo College
club under the direction of Grand Master Kim at
The Ohio State University. In addition to
teaching the Taekwondo Club at OSU, Robert was
also an instructor of the OSU Physical Education
Taekwondo and Karate Classes. Robert also taught
the OSU Hapkido club too when time allowed.
In 2000,
he began teaching at Taekwondo United in Lewis
Center, OH,
until March of 2003, when Taekwondo United closed
its doors. At that time Robert and Deanna started
a Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo club upon the wishes
of the dedicated students of Taekwondo United,
and started the search for a more permanent place
to teach and train.
In April
2003, Robert was
honored by being invited to join the
United Taekwondo Association under Grand
Master Kyongwon Ahn in Cincinnati, OH.
One year later, he and his wife opened Ahn
Taekwondo Columbus
in Lewis Center, Ohio, where he trains and
teaches today.
As
both a Traditional stylist and
Competitive stylist, Robert brings a unique
perspective to his classes by teaching both old
honored traditions and modern day sport training.
He is
certified by the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) as
a coach and referee. Although several time
medal winner over the years of competition in the
sport of Taekwondo, his most distinguished awards
have been the Ahn Taekwondo Institute
2003
Black Belt of the Year and the Ahn
Taekwondo Institute 2004 Grandmaster Award
Recipient.
Robert is currently the Ahn Black Belt
Society President and Secretary
for the Ohio
chapter of the United
States Taekwondo Won.

In 2005 Deanna Jones was
awarded Black Belt
of the Year by the United
Taekwondo Association, while Ahn Taekwondo Columbus
was awarded the distinction of being the
2005 School of the Year.
Beginning her
martial art studies in 1990 with
Grandmaster
Y.C. Kim, Ms. Jones has been studying martial arts
for over fifteen years. Her primary art is Moo Duk
Kwan Taekwondo, in which she earned her black belt in
1993. While attending The Ohio State University, she
began studying Hapkido, and has advanced to the rank
of 5th Gup. Additionally, she had the honor of
studying under
Sensei
Larry E. Bieri in Aikido at The Ohio
State University. Ms. Jones studied Sport and
Somatic Studies (sport kinesiology, biomechanics,
psychology, and philosophy) and Biomedical
Anthropology at OSU, which she applies to her martial
art studies.
In 2001 she began teaching at Taekwondo United in Lewis
Center, OH,
until March of 2003 when Taekwondo United closed
its doors. At that time, and due to the
requests of the dedicated students of
Taekwondo United, Robert and Deanna started
a Moo Duk Kwan Taekwondo club locally.
In 2003 the small Taekwondo club in Lewis Center
joined the United Taekwondo Association under
Grandmaster Kyongwon Ahn, which was relocated to
Cotter Street in Lewis Center in 2004-- their new
school as Ahn Taekwondo Columbus.
Now a 3rd Dan in
the UTA, Deanna Jones is an active black belt in the
association. With over 12 years of
Taekwondo teaching experience in the Columbus, Ohio
area, Ms. Jones leads the Beginners, Children's and
Lil' Dragon classes at
ATC. She also
has earned an
Assistant Instructor
certification with the United States Taekwondo Won.
She serves as the co-owner and Manager of Ahn
Taekwondo Columbus, and as an active member of the
Ahn Black Belt Society.

David Bishop’s first exposure to
martial arts came during service in the United States
Army in Viet Nam. Over three decades later in January
2002, at the age of 53, he made a decision to begin
again the study and training of martial arts with a
Taekwondo school in Lewis Center with Mr. Robert Jones.
In
2004, another decision was made by Mr. Bishop; to
compete. Qualification in the AAU States for National
competition as well as competing is Ahn Classic
Tournament, 2004 proved to be a very good beginning to
a competitive career after winning two gold medals at
the 2004 AAU Nationals in Ft Lauderdale. As the
year ended, Mr. Bishop received the 2004 Senior
Competitor Award from the United Taekwondo Association.
June 2005 brought Mr. Bishop a successful
promotion to 1st Dan. He continues his martial
arts journey by helping at Ahn Taekwondo Columbus and
facilitating with classes.
Jeff first joined Ahn
Taekwondo in 1983 while attending Miami University.
After achieving the rank of 1st Gup in
1986, he transferred to The Ohio State University
and put his Taekwondo journey on hold. After
eighteen years and the discovery of Ahn Taekwondo
Columbus in October of 2004, he resumed his
training. Fulfilling a personal goal in May of 2006,
in front of friends and family, Grandmaster Kyongwon
Ahn awarded Jeff his black belt.
Recently, Mr. Borders
has taken on the additional responsibility of
managing ATC and teaching three classes a week.
For his own amusement,
he plays acoustic versions of his favorite rock
songs on guitar, ukulele and blues harmonica. At
times, he's forced to sing Disney's High School
Musical with his kids.
Mr. Borders continues
his martial arts journey by practicing the basics,
teaching, and making the Lil' Dragons laugh.
